Stephen Burks for Chevalier Édition: PanierPosted: January 16, 2012
Launching at Maison & Objet this week in Paris, Chevalier Édition exhibits Stephen Burks’ new rug designs, Panier, which translates to English as “bread basket”. The name suggests reference to traditional textile binding techniques, which are imitated here in graphic interpretations. With the allusion to hand-wrapped constructions, these rugs have an intentionally naive quality, seen through imperfect circular shapes and inconsistent row widths. The Panier rugs highlight a fascination with handmade, traditional craft while upholding a modern aesthetic through color and a somewhat digital effect. Their thumbprint-like patterning also creates a kind-of unique signature on these original designs.
