Raphaëlle Bonamy: Gousset Chest Of Drawers

One way a designer can create a functioning object is to first understand and dissect an existing one. I love how Bonamy not only relies on the existing mechanics of the bicycle but also exposes those mechanics to the user. It shows a cleverness on her part and also reminds us that objects can transcend their original purposes. It shows us that perfectly functioning mechanics can also be beautiful.  Bonamy says that “the bicycle chain becomes jewelry, a handle – that which we usually don’t want to touch is now shiny and attractive” which is absolutely the charm in the Gousset Chest of Drawers.  Additionally it changes our standard perception of how a drawer should open or function. Are there benefits to a chest of drawers that open side to side?  What other objects could use a similar functioning system?  I’m imagining suitcases or other storage cases that could allow someone to access their items without ever having to unpack.  This design wins me over for its simplicity, ingenuity and beauty.  Love it!
